Ada grew up as one of 11 children in a comfortable colony of hobbits known as Badger Run. Her family operated the largest apiary in Amberweld, adjacent to a cidery owned by their cousins. Life was easy in the apiary, where Ada often worked with her father. After his death, the apiary was left to Ada’s irresponsible eldest sister, Adelina. Adelina was preferred by their mother, as Ada had been by their father, having inherited his more adventurous nature. Adelina prevented Ada from being involved with the hives out of pride, and a handful of their father’s prized colonies died as a result of negligence. Adelina then sold the apiary, and the remaining hives were destroyed. Ada was shattered, and could bear life in Amberweld no longer. She took leave of hobbit-land and wandered for some time, harboring conflicted feelings about her family. Though wary of the Big Folk, she came to settle in Ravenwood, where she found a long-abandoned and decrepit hobbit hole. She purchased the land with a hefty loan, her intent to build a new apiary. Though she believed the land to be perfect for her new hives, Ada’s queens died in the heat of her first Ravenwood summer, and she has had no luck in starting her new apiary since. Running a shop in town, she tries to keep order in the ever-changing, perilous Ravenwood, while also saving every penny to pay off her loan to the bankers in Poke. Though an orderly hobbit, Ada’s determination can border on scrappiness in a tight spot, and she has been known to be sensitive about matters of her bees and her past.

  1. I’ve known many a Ciderbee. Ada is the norm for the tribe; Adelina the exception. Last I saw, she still carried with her the seed for the next hive she hopes to cultivate.
