Prasidie’s Bane

For those who use magic, they know it is alive. It is a living, breathing force that can be bent and shaped to their will. Often, this magic can be contained and amplified through objects like wands, books or other focus, but sometimes, objects can stifle the use of magic, even in those who it flows freely through. Iron is an example, stifling the magic of some and burning the skin of others. But magic like Prasidiah can completely drain the magic of a user in its presence to the point of exhaustion and, in extreme cases, death.

Prasidie was a wizard in the early days of Ravenwood, when dark magic and evil sorcerers ruled over the wild woods. Many flocked to Prasidie as a safe harbor of protection during the dark reign of sorcerers, for he had protective sigils that prevented the use of magic within their circle. But as the sorcerers continued to grow in power, the sigils weren’t enough. Prasidie had to work harder to protect himself and his friends from magic. It was time, he decided, to put a damper on magic for good.

He descended into his workshop. A little band of guards, some magic-users, others not, protected the door to Prasidie’s workspace. But the longer Prasidie worked, the clearer it became that was he was doing was incredibly dangerous. Those who guarded Prasidie’s door that used magic grew increasingly pale. They began to grow weak in the knees and feel very unwell. Those who did not use magic could not feel a thing, however. They continued to stand guard, even as the magic users continued to collapse. Eventually, after what felt like an eternity, Prasidie emerged. He was carrying what would come to be known as the Bane of Prasidie or simply, the Bane. In creating this Bane, Prasidie had drained all of his magical power. For the moment, he and his friends would be safe. Whenever anyone came close to the little hub that was protected by Prasidie’s Bane, magic would be drained from them and they would be safe. Sorcerers who came near were easily subdued.

Slowly, it became evident that the Bane had other uses. Those who had been cursed who came near the bane were cured of many magical diseases and curses. Even the mighty power of Meldryn could not be stopped by Prasidie’s Bane.

Unfortunately, after the sorcerers were defeated, Prasidie locked the Bane away, never to be seen again. But for someone who could find the Bane, who knows what sort of power they might have?

  1. Stories like these make me glad I’m not personally involved in magic- any magic that is more than your average, run-of-the-mill, sky-at-sunset kind of magic, that is.
